Introduction to Psychodynamic Thinking Lunch Series

A 6-Week Professional Development Series for Clinicians

via Zoom, Fridays at 12:00PM - 1:00PM EST, May 2nd - June 6th, 2025

Join Andrew Morton, LICSW, for an engaging exploration of psychodynamic theory and its practical applications in clinical work. This weekly lunch-time series bridges theory with daily practice, helping clinicians develop a deeper understanding of their clients' presenting issues and underlying dynamics.

Using Malan's triangles as our foundation, we'll explore how unconscious processes, defense mechanisms, and the therapeutic relationship influence our clinical work. Each one-hour session builds upon the previous, creating a comprehensive framework for enhanced case conceptualization and treatment planning.

Clinicians from different theoretical backgrounds are encouraged to attend as we will discuss how to integrate this trans-theoretically to other approaches such as IFS, DBT, CBT, EMDR and ERP.

Dates: Six Consecutive Fridays

May 2 - June 6, 2025

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Eastern

Perfect for:

  • Early career clinicians seeking to expand their theoretical framework

  • Experienced therapists wanting to refresh their psychodynamic foundations

  • Clinicians interested in understanding resistance and defense mechanisms

  • Anyone seeking to deepen their clinical effectiveness

Six (6) CEUs have been awarded by the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation Social Work, Allied Mental Health and Psychological Examiners' Boards.

Out of state clinicians can be provided course materials and verification of attendance for CEU application to their respective licensing boards.

About the Presenter
Andrew R. Morton, LICSW, is a licensed independent clinical social worker with over 17 years of clinical experience specializing in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), a psychoanalytic treatment model. He completed a comprehensive three-year core training program in Boston certified by the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association with Patricia Coughlin, PhD, which included learning from Dr. Coughlin's therapy videos and receiving supervision on his own recorded sessions.

Prior to his ISTDP specialization, Andrew completed a one-year course in Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy in Montreal with Dr. Steven Sandler, which also involved supervision of his recorded therapy sessions. He also participated in a year-long fragile case round series with Dr. Allan Abbass, studying ISTDP approaches to complex trauma through analysis of Dr. Abbass's case videos.

His clinical expertise includes treating complex cases of anxiety, depression, and medically unexplained symptoms. Andrew routinely engages in peer supervision with Dr. Erin Hall, another Vermont-based ISTDP therapist, where they review each other's session videos to maintain clinical excellence.

As a clinical supervisor, Andrew has guided multiple clinicians through the licensure process and currently provides training to Vermont mental health professionals. His teaching approach makes sophisticated psychodynamic concepts accessible and practical, helping clinicians enhance their case conceptualization skills and therapeutic effectiveness. Andrew holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Vermont.
